Shin Splints
Shin Splints: a general term for shin pain related to stress of the tissue and bones of the shin area. In almost all cases, the stress is caused by either a temporary or permanent instability of the foot. Shin splints are often reoccurring in runners and dancers. This condition can be controlled by properly aligning the feet and supporting the arch with orthotics. Westcoast Orthopedic Laboratories full foot support system is especially effective on shin splints because the foot is stabilized throughout the whole stride, this is important for sports which involve lots of running as the most pressure is transferred to the shin as the foot weights on the ball of the foot. In dance shin splints often occur because of instability when landing jumps on the front of the foot, only full foot orthotics can help stabilize the foot and shin during this type of move.
Other treatments to speed recovery include ice, massage along tender area and rest. Rest alone will only help if the motion that caused the splint in the case isn’t repeated without a new form of support. In many cases training does not have to be reduced completely if Westcoast Orthopedic Laboratories Orthotics are worn while training or competing. |
