Heel Spurs & the Treatment of Heal Spurs
Heel spurs: a bony-like build-up on the bottom of the heel, usually caused by the stress of over-pronation or arch instability. The spur is the result of tissue pulling away from the bone and is usually quite painful to put weight on.Orthotics can reduce the strain on the tissue and stabilize the foot, allowing the spur to heal. Westcoast Orthopedic Laboratories offer many models of Orthotics with gel in the heel area, providing cushioning while the spur repairs itself. If you have a low arch that pronates (rolls inwards), our Full Foot Orthotics are recommended to roll your foot outwards and subsequently lift the arch. If you have a high arch in need of more stability, the Sport Supporter will support your foot arch, stabilize your foot and provide gel padding for your foot; bringing relief to the spur area as it mends.
Many people find ultrasound, icing and stretching to be helpful, as well. However, if you do not cure the mechanical cause of the spur, it will be likely to return once normal activity is resumed; therefore Orthotics are recommended even when other treatments are being used. Night Splints can be worn at night to stretch out the Plantar Fascia while you rest, stopping the pain which often occurs first thing in the morning. Heel spurs are usually cureable without surgery, although in some cases it is warrented. If surgery is necessary, Orthotics should still be worn in order to prevent the reoccurence of the problem. |
